Socioenvironmental Responsibility

FEBRABAN and its associates undertake a range of initiatives to strengthen the image and position of the financial system, in addition to its commitment to fostering sustainable development.

Our Approach to Sustainability

As resource intermediaries between different economic agents, banking institutions play an important role in directing capital to projects and activities that contribute to sustainable development.

New patterns of production and consumption that are premised on the more efficient use of natural resources and that aim at greater inclusion and social well-being represent business opportunities for the sector. At the same time, managing the financial risks associated with socio-environmental challenges, such as climate change, becomes imperative to maintain the stability and resilience of the global financial system.

The initiatives that FEBRABAN develops in Sustainability aim to meet at least one of the following objectives:

- Continuously improve the management of socio-environmental and climate risks by the banking sector;

- Channel resources for green and inclusive businesses;

- Include ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) aspects in the banks' business strategies;

-Disseminate the agenda to stakeholders.

-

Our projects seek to align the performance of the Brazilian banking sector with the main references and agreements in force on the subject, such as the commitments assumed by the country under the Climate Convention (Paris Agreement) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both initiatives of the United Nations. Another relevant reference is the Financial Stability Board (FSB) Task Force on the disclosure of financial information associated with climate change, which FEBRABAN has formally signed up to. Since its launch, we have also endorsed the UNEP-FI “Principles for Banking Sustainability” initiative.

The work in this area is the responsibility of FEBRABAN's Sustainability, Financial Citizenship, Consumer Relations and Self-Regulation Department, which is guided by the Executive Board and Presidency, and by a Committee dedicated to Sustainability issues, made up of about 30 associated banks. An Intrasectoral Sustainability Commission also meets periodically to align the actions of the National Financial System. ABRAPP, AMEC, ANBIMA, B3, CNSEG, and FEBRABAN participate in this Commission.

The work developed in recent years is available in this Sustainability section of the FEBRABAN website¹ on various research and training topics and is intended to expand the contribution of the Brazilian Banking System in the process of transition to a Green and inclusive Economy, exploring opportunities and seeking solutions to the challenges faced in the socio-environmental field.
